Field Robots: Agriculture, Mining, and Space
Field robots work outdoors in places that are dirty, dangerous, or far away: farms, mines, the deep sea, and other planets. Terrain is rough, weather changes, and communication can be slow or missing. A Mars rover is 4 to 24 minutes away by radio, so it cannot be steered live like a toy car. The farther away a robot is, the more it must decide for itself.
Delay and autonomy
A command sent at time \(t\) arrives at \(t + d\), and the operator sees the result at \(t + 2d\). With a round-trip delay \(2d\) and speed \(v\), the robot travels
before the operator can react to anything new. Light takes 1.3 s each way to the Moon and 3 to 22 minutes to Mars.
What to notice
Close by, live driving works. With a long delay, the operator's steering arrives too late, so the rover hits rocks it was steered away from, or it must crawl very slowly. Turn on onboard hazard avoidance and the rover steers around rocks itself while still heading for the operator's goal. Mars rovers work this way: humans pick targets, and the rover plans its own safe path, using its cameras and an onboard map.
